Double Trouble State Park in the Bayville section of Berkeley Township had been closed since Monday, Aug. 29 due to the rabid fox's "encounters" with park visitors, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Animals live only about a week after contracting rabies,, the DEP said.

New Jersey Fish and Wildlife was taking steps to address the situation, the DEP said in a statement last week, saying the park was closed out of an "abundance of caution."

Animals infected with rabies will display bizarre, sometimes aggressive, behavior with neurologic signs such as circling, wobbly gate, strange vocalizations and seizures.

If an animal in a state park is suspected to be rabid, call 1-877-WARNDEP (1-877-927-6337).
